Is Invisalign Painful?

Invisalign is one of the best ways to straighten crooked teeth. Just like traditional metal braces, Invisalign works hard to align your teeth and correct problems with your bite.

Using Invisalign aligners has several distinct advantages, most notably that the aligners are removable to make eating and cleaning teeth more comfortable. Invisalign in Bonita Springs continues to grow in popularity among our dental patients.

Before you begin treatment with Invisalign, however, it’s essential to have all the facts and to get answers to all your questions.

One of the more commonly asked questions we hear about Invisalign is whether Invisalign treatment is painful. The most straightforward answer to this question is that yes, straightening teeth always comes with some pain—but the more often you wear your aligners and the more compliant you are with your treatment, the faster the painful intervals should fade.

Moving Teeth into Proper Alignment

The ultimate goal of Invisalign is to reposition your teeth. And whether you’re using Invisalign or traditional braces, it’s impossible to reposition your teeth without a little force and pressure.

You will always experience some degree of pain with orthodontic treatments because the soreness and achy sensation that comes with orthodontia is a sign that the treatment is working and moving your teeth. The good news is that you should never experience strong, sharp, or severe pain with Invisalign.

As your teeth shift into proper alignment, it’s normal for them to feel sore or tender for a few days. Typically, you wear each Invisalign aligner for several weeks, so your teeth should only be sensitive at the beginning of each new treatment. When you wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day as instructed, your teeth adjust more quickly, and your pain should subside more regularly.

Treating Soreness from Invisalign

If you experience sensitivity and mild pain with Invisalign in North Naples, you can manage your pain with over-the-counter medicines such as ibuprofen and Advil. It’s best to stick to a softer diet during the first few days of wearing each aligner. You should also avoid overly hot or cold beverages that could irritate your teeth.

Most of your treatment should be spent pain-free as your teeth adjust to their new alignment. If you’re concerned about your pain levels or have questions about your Invisalign treatment, please call our Bonita Springs dentist at (239) 301-2713.
