Strong Teeth, More Durable Fillings: What the Future Holds
Dental composite fillings placed by Bonita Springs dentist Dr. Michael Gostigian are highly durable and can last between seven and ten years with proper care. That seems like a pretty long time, right? What if we told you that there might be a way to make fillings last even longer?
When creating a filling, Dr. Gostigian starts by removing the decayed portion of the tooth. Most decay penetrates the dental enamel and reaches into the layer beneath, which is called dentin.
The lifespan of a filling is related to the bond created between the filling material and dentin. Since dentin is a very soft material, it does not make a good base for the filling, and a weak bond is a reason most fillings crack or fall out.
However, a recent study published in the Journal of Organic Chemistry says that extracts from pine tree bark may be the answer to extending the lifespan of dental fillings!
Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have discovered that compounds in the pine tree extract strengthen dentin by altering the chemical structure of a tooth to make it stronger and allow fillings to bind more securely. They estimate that this may extend the lifespan of a dental filling by as much as a decade!
This is an interesting discovery, considering that nearly 90% of all adults between the ages of 20 and 64 have had cavities. Bonita Springs dentist Dr. Michael Gostigian is always looking for new methods for improving the quality and durability of your dental work.
We aren’t sure when or if this type of treatment will be available, but you can count on us to provide you with excellent, high-quality fillings and restorations that last as long as possible!
