Why do I need a crown? Why can't you just fill the tooth?
Both fillings and crowns are important procedures used to strengthen and protect teeth. Fillings are one of the most important services we offer (aside from professional cleanings and exams). They’re a fairly conservative treatment for removing small areas of decay and strengthening the tooth structure to make it functional again.
However, if decay damages more than half of the tooth structure, it’s no longer strong enough to retain a filling. That is when Dr. Gostigian would make the recommendation to place a dental crown. The crown fits completely over the damaged tooth, up to and under the gum line, which is why they’re often referred to as “caps.” The crown acts as a shield that protects the weakened structure of your natural tooth.
Quality Dental Crowns
All our dental crowns are fabricated using porcelain because of its strength, durability, and natural appearance. Dental crowns are extremely durable, and in certain cases can last as long as 15 years or more.
