- Brushing and flossing may seem like a chore, but you would be surprised how much better a clean mouth makes you feel. You know how a shower can pick you up when you don’t feel well? Just think of oral hygiene as a shower for your mouth.
- And for goodness sake, don’t ever share your toothbrush. You have enough of your own germs to keep you busy that you don’t need to throw someone else’s into the mix. Plus, the Centers for Disease Control says that the flu virus can live on moist surfaces for 72 hours, which means the other person will likely become infected. Friends don’t let friends use their toothbrush.
- Cough drops can provide a lot of soothing relief when you’re sick, but you really don’t need all that sugar sitting on your teeth and creating cavities. There are plenty of sugar-free cough drops available to choose from that provide relief and won’t lead to decay.
- Staying hydrated when you’re sick is important for many reasons. As far as your oral health goes, it’s important to avoid dry mouth because it can actually put you at increased risk for cavities. Cold remedies can dry out your mouth, so drink lots of water and suck on a sugarless cough drop to increase your saliva flow.
