The Difference Between Crowns and Bridges
We refer to dental crowns and bridges as restorations because they are dental prosthetics that “restore” your smile’s appearance and function. But they have very different purposes.
If a tooth is too damaged or compromised for a dental filling, Dr. Gostigian would recommend a dental crown to restore the tooth. A crown encases the entire tooth and protects it like a little helmet.
If you need to replace a missing tooth, a dental bridge is an option that fills the gap left behind. A bridge is typically made as a three-piece unit and relies on healthy adjacent teeth for support.

Financing Your Dental Restorations
Now that you’ve learned a bit more about our options for restoring damaged teeth, you’re probably thinking about finances. We accept and file all insurance claims for you and can assist with billing.
Uninsured? We still have options to make your treatments affordable. One popular payment method we accept is CareCredit. This convenient interest-free financing program that allows you to decide how much you can afford each month, then break it down into manageable monthly payments. Restoring Damaged & Missing Teeth with Dental Crowns
A dental crown is necessary to provide strength and support to teeth that have been compromised by damage or decay. Also referred to as a “cap,” we place a dental crown over a damaged tooth to reinforce and protect it. A dental crown functions like a natural tooth, allowing you to speak and chew normally and enhancing your appearance.
Dr. Gostigian creates dental crowns using strong and durable materials like ceramic and porcelain. Either is an excellent choice for crowns because they can be shaped and color-matched to look like your natural teeth.

Teeth that are cracked, chipped, or broken detract from your appearance and make you feel self-conscious. These flaws can also cause discomfort and problems when speaking and chewing.
A dental crown is a very versatile restoration that Dr. Gostigian might recommend in a variety of situations:
- Protect fractured teeth from further damage
- Restore a broken or chipped tooth
- Protect a tooth after a root canal
- Strengthen a tooth with a large filling
- Anchor a dental bridge in place
- Provide a restoration for a dental implant
- Resolve cosmetic flaws like severely stained teeth
Do you have a damaged or broken tooth but aren't sure if a dental crown is the best choice for you? Please call our Bonita Springs dentist office at (239) 301-2713 to arrange an appointment with Dr. Gostigian.
There are several materials available to make dental crowns and bridges, but our metal-free porcelain crowns are the most realistic in appearance. Dr. Gostigian uses his skill and expertise to create porcelain restorations that closely match the color of your natural teeth. Once your new crown is in place, no one will suspect that you’ve had any dental work done!
The Procedure for Dental Crowns at Bonita Grande Dental
Dr. Gostigian starts by taking safe, comfortable digital x-rays to determine the extent of damage to the tooth. The tooth is then prepared depending on your situation, and we take a dental impression we use to create your permanent crown.
We will help you select a shade for your new crown that will blend perfectly with your natural teeth. We then send the impressions to our custom dental lab where your crown will be custom-made to our exact specifications.
In about two weeks when your custom crown is ready, you will return to our office so we can make adjustments for fit as necessary. We then cement the tooth in place and polish it so that it perfectly matches your surrounding teeth.
Ways Missing and Damaged Teeth Impact Your Health
You may not be aware of it, but your teeth are always moving slightly. Losing a tooth jeopardizes your oral health because neighboring teeth can drift and move into the open space. This movement may result in crowding, crooked teeth, or bite problems that create a cascade of unwanted conditions:
- Broken or worn-down teeth
- Chipped or fractured teeth
- Teeth grinding or bruxism
- Gum disease
- Potential bone and tooth loss
- TMJ disorders
As you can see, a lot can go wrong if you choose not to replace a tooth with a dental bridge or dental implant! If you've been putting up with missing teeth and are ready to take a step forward, please contact our dental office at (239) 301-2713.
How Dental Bridges Work
When you lose a tooth, you should replace it as soon as possible. Not only do missing teeth make you feel self-conscious, but they make it difficult to chew comfortably and may even affect your speech.
While dental bridges replace missing teeth, they also improve your appearance, restore function in your smile, and improve your oral health. Dr. Gostigian uses dental bridges at our Bonita Springs dentist office to:
- Fill the gap left by a missing tooth
- Prevent adjacent teeth from drifting into the open space
- Provide a fixed alternative to a removable partial denture
A well-made dental bridge is attached securely to neighboring teeth and is quite stable and durable.
Bridges vs. Dental Implants
Dental bridges are similar to dental implants because we use both to replace missing teeth. But a dental bridge is a prosthetic device that conceals the open space left when you lose a tooth. A dental implant replaces the entire tooth, from root to crown.
There are pros and cons to each:
- Dental bridges are fast and affordable, but we have to involve adjacent teeth to hold them in place
- Dental implants are a standalone tooth replacement, but they’re more costly, and getting them can take months.
Dr. Gostigian has helped many of our patients replace missing teeth with dental bridges. Please call us if you would like to arrange a consultation to learn more.
