Can You Get Dentures if You Have Receding Gums?

Yes, we can typically create dentures that work for receding gums. Receding gums often result from gingivitis or periodontal disease (gum disease).

Gum disease can lead to tooth loss without treatment. However, your dentist may recommend dentures if you've started to lose teeth. Of course, it is still crucial to treat your disease. Failure to treat can lead to bone loss in the jaw—making it difficult or impossible to wear dentures—and wellness issues involving the heart and lungs.

About Gum Disease

Gum disease is advanced gingivitis and is usually the culprit when gums start to recede. Many factors put you at risk for periodontal disease, including, but not limited to:

  • Tobacco use
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Hormonal changes
  • Lack of dental care

The best way to mitigate your risk factors is to visit the dentist every six months for checkups and teeth cleanings. And be sure to brush and floss twice daily at a minimum.

If you're considering dentures and you have oral health issues, don't worry. Your dentist first evaluates you for tooth replacement and can recommend pretreatments if needed, including special dental care for your gums. This visit lets us know whether you're suitable for dentures or partials.

If you are, we take impressions, and an affiliate lab uses our models to create the prosthetics—you choose the tooth shade and gum color!

When your dentures are ready, you come in for a final fitting and adjustment. After that, you're free to enjoy your new smile.

We also offer implant-retained and snap-in dentures in Bonita Springs! This means a stable tooth replacement similar to the teeth you have lost. Snap-in dentures are durable but removable for easy cleaning.
