Dental implants are considered the gold standard of tooth replacement, so when I talk to my patients about replacing their missing teeth, I often recommend dental implants for their stability and functionality. Because dental implants mimic the tooth’s root, they offer the added benefit of helping maintain jawbone density.
However, I also make sure my patients understand the importance of caring for their dental implants to avoid infection and inflammation and to help them keep their new smile for a lifetime.
Signs of Infection after Implant Surgery
Because the dental implant procedure is surgical in nature, there is a risk of infection around the implant site. I tell my patients to pay attention to any of the following signs of infection:
- Red and swollen gums around the implants
- Loose implants
- Pain at the implant site
- Fever
- Bleeding or pus at the implant site
Caring for Your Dental Implants
To manage and prevent infection and inflammation around your dental implants, I recommend the following tips to my patients:
- Practice good oral hygiene — The best way to avoid infection is to gently brush your dental implants twice daily for two minutes. This will help prevent infection-causing bacteria from accumulating. In addition, flossing every day can help remove any food particles your toothbrush might miss.
- Rinse your mouth — For your dental implants to heal properly, it’s important to rinse your mouth twice a day with either antiseptic mouthwash or a saltwater solution. Rinsing your mouth can help you avoid infection and inflammation.
- Avoid tobacco — Smoking can keep your mouth from healing properly and can introduce unwanted bacteria into your mouth. It’s best to avoid smoking before and after implant surgery.
- Avoid sugar — Sugar can damage your gums while they are trying to heal, so avoiding foods and drinks with sugar in them can help keep them from becoming inflamed or infected.
