White, shiny teeth are everywhere – from celebrities to social media stars and even politicians. Patients in our Bonita Springs practice want to achieve the same sparkling smile.
- The whitening systems from the drugstore are just as good as in-office treatments. Take-home whitening kits can be found over the counter and are one of the most common methods patients use due to their low cost and accessibility. They typically come in a one-size-fits all tray and are worn for around an hour a day. These kits often contain low amounts of hydrogen peroxide (the whitening ingredient) but can still cause sensitivity. Results are typically mixed and multiple trays may be required to achieve desired results. They can also be messy and cause gum irritation due to the bleaching material contacting the gums.
- Lasers are the best and only professional whitening treatments. While lasers can be used to whiten teeth, a high-dose bleaching agent needs to be applied to achieve results. This strong bleach can result in significant sensitivity. Our patients see excellent results with custom whitening trays. Custom molds are made of the teeth and designed so the bulk of the bleaching material remains in contact with only the teeth. The bleaching syringes contain a higher concentration of the whitening ingredients compared to what is found in an over-the-counter whitening kit. As a result, less material needs to be used, and trays only need to be worn as little as 15 minutes a day.
- You just have to deal with sensitivity to have white teeth.Sensitivity is one of the most common side effects of bleaching your teeth. However, at Bonita Grande Dental, we have several methods for combatting this issue. First, we recommend patients use an anti-sensitivity toothpaste 1-2 weeks before they begin whitening. Second, fluoride treatments immediately following the whitening may also help relieve symptoms. If sensitivity develops, it will usually subside within 1-2 weeks.
There are many different products available for teeth whitening. Toothpastes, at home whitening kits, and in-office bleaching treatments, just to name a few. Which system is best ultimately depends on the person’s overall goal and budget. At our Bonita Springs practice, we can help you achieve a beautiful smile in a way that best fits your goals and lifestyle.
