You just got your new dental crown, and you couldn’t be happier! It blends seamlessly with your smile so none of your acquaintances will notice that you’ve had dental work. Better yet, you can go back to eating all the foods you love, and you no longer have to hide a damaged tooth when you smile.
So, by all means, go out and enjoy the freedom that comes with a healthy smile. A well-made crown can last as long as 15 years when taken care of properly. Like any other investment, though, there are certain things you need to do to protect it and get the most use out of it.
Get Serious about Oral Hygiene
Bacteria that lingers in your mouth when you don’t brush and floss thoroughly can seep under the crown at the gum line and lead to gum disease and tooth decay. If you haven’t been conscientious with your oral hygiene, start now. Unsure of your technique? Talk to your dental hygienist who can offer tips for making sure your teeth are clean and your gums healthy.
Respect the Porcelain
Many of the same foods that damage teeth will also damage a crown. While dental porcelain is remarkably durable, it is not indestructible. Eating hard or chewy candies, popcorn or hard nuts, and chewing on ice can all compromise the porcelain, and enough force can cause it to chip or crack.
Make and Keep Routine Dental Appointments
During your routine exams and cleaning appointments, your dentist will check your crown to ensure that it’s in good condition. Dental cement is designed to last, but tooth decay can cause the seal to break. It’s much better if your dentist finds a loose crown than if it pops off in the middle of an important business dinner!
