The Difference Between Crowns and Bridges
We refer to dental crowns and bridges as restorations because they are dental prosthetics that “restore” your smile’s appearance and function. But they have very different purposes.
If a tooth is too damaged or compromised for a dental filling, Dr. Gostigian would recommend a dental crown to restore the tooth. A crown encases the entire tooth and protects it like a little helmet.
If you need to replace a missing tooth, a dental bridge is an option that fills the gap left behind. A bridge is typically made as a three-piece unit and relies on healthy adjacent teeth for support.

Dental Crowns for Damaged or Missing Teeth
A dental crown is necessary to provide strength and support to teeth that have been compromised by damage or decay. Also referred to as a “cap,” we place a dental crown over a damaged tooth to reinforce and protect it. A dental crown functions like a natural tooth, allowing you to speak and chew normally and enhancing your appearance.
Dr. Gostigian creates dental crowns using strong and durable materials like ceramic and porcelain. Either is an excellent choice for crowns because they can be shaped and color-matched to look like your natural teeth.

Teeth that are cracked, chipped, or broken detract from your appearance and make you feel self-conscious. These flaws can also cause discomfort and problems when speaking and chewing.
A dental crown is a very versatile restoration that Dr. Gostigian might recommend in a variety of situations:
- Protect fractured teeth from further damage
- Restore a broken or chipped tooth
- Protect a tooth after a root canal
- Strengthen a tooth with a large dental filling
- Anchor a dental bridge in place
- Provide a restoration for a dental implant
- Resolve cosmetic flaws like severely stained teeth
Do you have a damaged or broken tooth but aren't sure if a dental crown is the best choice for you? Please call our Bonita Springs dentist office at (239) 301-2713 to arrange an appointment with Dr. Gostigian.
Porcelain Crowns
There are several materials available to make dental crowns and bridges, but our metal-free porcelain crowns are the most realistic in appearance. Dr. Gostigian uses his skill and expertise to create porcelain restorations that closely match the color of your natural teeth. Once your new crown is in place, no one will suspect that you’ve had any dental work done!
The Procedure for Crowns at Bonita Grande Dental
Dr. Gostigian starts by taking safe, comfortable digital x-rays to determine the extent of damage to the tooth. The tooth is then prepared depending on your situation, and we take a dental impression we use to create your permanent crown.
We will help you select a shade for your new crown that will blend perfectly with your natural teeth. We then send the impressions to our custom dental lab where your crown will be custom-made to our exact specifications.
In about two weeks when your custom crown is ready, you will return to our office so we can make adjustments for fit as necessary. We then cement the tooth in place and polish it so that it perfectly matches your surrounding teeth.
Both dental fillings and dental crowns are important procedures used to strengthen and protect teeth.
